The supplement business is a billion dollar business. They are everywhere and most are unregulated. People are popping them by the dozens. Should we? Dr. Mark Hyman discusses the usefulness of supplements in a recent conversation with Dr. Elizabeth Boham. Bottom line according to the doctors is, yes we do need certain high quality supplements. Here is why. Ideally it would be wonderful to get all of our vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from our food. But our food and our food system is NOT your grandparents’. Things have changed over many years and not for the better. Dr. Hyman explains, “Even with a perfect diet, the combination of many things—including our depleted soils, the storage and transportation of our food, genetic alterations of traditional heirloom species, and the increased stress and nutritional demands resulting from a toxic environment—make it impossible for us to get all the vitamins and minerals we need solely from the foods we eat.” The average apple is stored for 1 year before we take that first bite! High quality supplements help with insufficient nutrients, healthy aging, skin, depression, and chronic illness. Our bodies give us so much information on what we may be lacking. For example, if you press your shin bone and feel pain-this may mean your are deficient in Vitamin D. Have cracks near your mouth? The doctors tell us you may have a B vitamin problem. Does your eye twitch? You may lack magnesium. Our blood and urine tell whether the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients are doing what they are supposed to be doing. Are they being properly absorbed and utilized? This is why it is important to buy good quality supplements and know what is in them. Make sure your supplements have been rigorously studied! This will hopefully insure that they are effective for whatever your body needs or does not need. To learn more about supplements listen below to Dr. Mark Hyman and Elizabeth Bohman.
