Independent laboratory tests commissioned by Environmental Working Group (” EWG”) revealed high levels of glyphosate in hummus, chickpeas, dried and canned beans, dried lentils and garbanzo flour. Glyphosate, a weed killing chemical, has allegedly been linked to cancer. 90% of the 37 conventional, non-organic, chickpea and chickpea-based samples tested had detectable levels of glyphosate. EWG also tested 12 samples of organic hummus and six samples of organic chickpeas. Most contained glyphosate, but at much lower levels than the conventional ones. Glyphosate is not permitted to be sprayed on organic crops. EWG feels that “these specific samples may have been contaminated by the chemicals drifting from nearby conventional crop fields, where it was likely sprayed as a pre-harvest drying agent.” We at Healthshifter enjoy making our own hummus. We also buy Original Hummus Cedar’s Organic which was found to have a glyphosate amount of 2 ppb*- According to the article “* This sample was below the limit of quantification of 5 ppb.” Source: EWG, from tests by Anresco Laboratories of products purchased between January and March 2020.
