Research shows that having strong connections with your partner, friends, and family can lead to better health. For many, this pandemic has put a whole new spin on our relationships! We are either spending a lot more time together or a lot more time apart. Do you want to create stronger connections with the people in your life? If yes, read on!
Here are ways to connect with people you are spending MORE or LESS time with currently:
- Stay away from criticism, instead communicate use I statements: “I feel frustrated when you do not wash your hands after touching a door knob because I fear something will happen to you” or “I feel sad that we have not talked on the phone recently because I really miss you and am sad we are apart.”
- Pay attention to your own and their triggers and needs, determine what helps you/them the most and share this with each other.
- Set boundaries and make time for routine. Do you need more time alone? Do you need more time together? What are your schedules like? When are good times for you to connect? What are some ways you can connect? Dinner, a walk, etc.
- Be the BEST LISTENER EVER by: making eye contact in person or on video, summarizing what your partner/friend/family member says, only giving advice if asked for some, validating their feelings, empathizing and showing them that you are on their side!
- Schedule a date in your calendars to do something fun! Here are some suggested activities: spa night, dance party, game night, cooking, cocktail party, movie night, eat a meal together or virtually!
- Show your people you appreciate them by: writing a note, doing a RAK (random act of kindness), sending them or giving them a handmade art project, doing a chore for them!
