Best Face Mask For Covid-19

Dr. Michael Greger discusses masks and Covid-19 from the perspective of engineers at the University of Cambridge, Center For Disease Control(CDC) and World Health Organization(WHO). Though there are conflicting views due to everchanging information, research, science and data, Dr. Greger noted the following. Cloth masks are better than no masks. Homemade masks from scarves, pillowcases, and 100% heavyweight cotton t-shirts, block bacteria and viruses “60% as well as surgical masks(90% blockage)”. Forget about making masks out of tea towels, vacuum bags, windbreakers or denim jeans– they make it too hard to breathe! Probably the most suitable fabric would be cotton flannel. Dr. Greger says we can use 1 single sock pressed tightly against our nose and mouth if we are in a pinch or in an emergency situation. The CDC recommends cloth not surgical masks as there is a critical shortage of personal protective gear on the front lines. As for N95 masks or respirators, as they are sometimes called, these are to protect the wearer who is in close contact with a Covid-19 patient. The CDC and WHO organization have conflicting views as to whether N95s or surgical masks should be worn by healthcare workers. We are still learning. Until we learn more, however, those in close contact with coughing patients should protect their eyes with at least a face shield. Here are some additional helpful points: Don’t touch the front of your mask when you are wearing or taking it off. Immediately after removing your mask, WASH YOUR HANDS. Wash your masks frequently. Remember, do just about anything that will keep you conscious of where your hands are at all moments in time and will stop you from touching your face, eyes, mouth and nose!
